President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the distribution of palliatives to Student Union Government (SUG) presidents in higher institutions nationwide. This initiative, coordinated by the Office of the Special Adviser to the President on Student Engagement, involves the allocation of rice bags to representatives of student bodies across the country.
Presidential Commitment to Students
Speaking during the distribution ceremony on Tuesday, Asefon Sunday, the Special Adviser on Student Engagement, emphasized that the move underscores President Tinubu’s commitment to supporting the student community.
“Today, SUG presidents across the federation, by God’s grace, will receive rice from President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, a leader who understands the importance of students as leaders not only of tomorrow but also of today,” Asefon said.
He explained that while the palliatives were initially planned for the 2024 festive period, logistical delays caused the distribution to be postponed.
“The President provided the rice, but it arrived in Abuja very late, around December 28 last year. So, this year, we decided to invite SUG leaders to Abuja for a personal handover of the rice.”
A Historic First for Nigerian Student Leaders
Asefon highlighted the unprecedented nature of the gesture, noting it is the first time a sitting president has directly engaged with SUG leaders in this manner.
“We selected two SUG presidents from each zone to represent their peers and manage the distribution of the palliatives. This has never happened in the history of this country—having the President personally reach out to student leaders, particularly SUG presidents. This is the first time.”
Observers note that the palliatives reflect President Tinubu’s broader strategy of building stronger ties with Nigerian youth and fostering their development within educational institutions.
Mixed Reactions and Broader Implications
In a related development, Segun Showunmi, a chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), recently described President Tinubu as the central power figure—or “cabal”—in his administration. Showunmi alleged that the President’s governance style concentrates decision-making around himself, limiting the autonomy of key officials like his Chief of Staff, Femi Gbajabiamila.
Despite such critiques, Tinubu’s student-focused initiative may enhance his image as a leader committed to engaging directly with critical demographics, particularly the youth. However, whether this approach will address broader concerns about inclusivity and delegation within his administration remains to be seen.
