Dangote Says His True Wealth May Be Higher Than Forbes and Bloomberg Estimates

Africa’s richest man, Aliko Dangote, has suggested that his actual net worth may be significantly higher than estimates published by global wealth tracking platforms such as Forbes and Bloomberg.

The Nigerian industrialist made the remarks during a street-style interview with content creator James Dumoulin of School of Hard Knocks, a clip later shared by DW Africa.

Dangote Questions Wealth Estimates

During the interview, Dangote responded to questions about his earnings and the valuation of his business empire, stating that widely circulated figures may not fully capture the true value of his assets.

He pointed out that several of his businesses remain privately held and are not fully reflected in public market valuations used by global ranking platforms.

“They say I’m worth $38 billion, but most of our businesses are not listed yet,” Dangote said.

Strong Business Performance

Dangote also highlighted the scale of his operations, stating that his conglomerate generated approximately $10 billion in revenue in the first quarter of the year.

His business interests span cement production, sugar, salt, fertiliser, and petroleum refining, making the Dangote Group one of the largest industrial conglomerates in Africa.

The billionaire’s comments underline the scale of his expanding industrial footprint across multiple sectors of the African economy.

Refinery Boosts Wealth Outlook

A key driver of increased attention around Dangote’s fortune is the Dangote Petroleum Refinery, which began operations in 2024.

The refinery is considered one of the largest industrial projects in Africa and is expected to significantly influence the valuation of Dangote’s business empire in the coming years.

Analysts say the facility could reshape perceptions of his net worth once its financial performance is fully reflected in market valuations or potential public listings.

Discrepancies in Wealth Estimates

Global wealth trackers currently provide differing estimates of Dangote’s fortune.

Bloomberg has valued his wealth at approximately $36.8 billion, while Forbes’ real-time rankings place it at over $32 billion.

The variation reflects differences in methodology, particularly in how privately held companies and unlisted assets are assessed.

Financial analysts note that private valuations remain one of the most complex aspects of billionaire wealth tracking.

Debate Over Valuation Methods

Experts say the challenge of accurately valuing unlisted businesses often leads to discrepancies in global rankings.

Bloomberg is generally seen as more conservative in assigning value to private assets, while other estimations may incorporate broader projections based on industry performance.

This has fueled ongoing debate about how accurately such rankings reflect real economic power, especially in emerging markets.

Vision of Industrial Legacy

Beyond discussions of wealth, Dangote also spoke about his long-term legacy.

When asked how he would like to be remembered, he said: “As somebody who industrialised Africa.”

The statement aligns with his long-standing mission of building large-scale industrial capacity across the continent.

Industrial Influence Across Africa

Over the past three decades, Dangote has developed a vast network of manufacturing and industrial operations across multiple African countries.

His businesses have played a significant role in local production, import substitution, and job creation across key sectors of the economy.

As his operations continue to expand, analysts expect ongoing debates about the true scale and valuation of his wealth to persist.

Ongoing Interest in Wealth Rankings

With the Dangote Refinery scaling up production and potential future listings of key subsidiaries under discussion, analysts believe the gap between official estimates and perceived value may continue to shift.

For now, Dangote’s remarks have reignited global interest in how billionaire wealth is measured, especially in cases where major assets remain privately held.
