An angry mob set a Bus Rapid Transit vehicle ablaze at Ogolonto bus stop in the Ikorodu area of Lagos State on Friday, October 16, following a collision in which a commercial motorcyclist was reportedly killed.
The incident sparked outrage among some residents and youths, who allegedly attacked the bus driver before setting the vehicle on fire. Police officers and personnel of the Lagos Neighbourhood Safety Corps intervened and rescued the driver from the crowd.
The circumstances surrounding the collision remained unclear in the available reports, while the identity of the motorcyclist had not been confirmed. Although several accounts described the crash as fatal, a Lagos transport authority spokesperson said he could not confirm whether the rider had died.
According to a report by The PUNCH, the driver was beaten during the disturbance but survived after security operatives intervened. He subsequently received medical attention.
Footage reported by SaharaReporters showed the BRT bus engulfed in flames as the fire consumed the vehicle. Reports indicated that the burning followed the crowd’s reaction to the collision and claimed that the motorcyclist had been crushed to death. Firefighters and police officers later arrived at the scene and assessed the situation, according to an account cited by TheCable.
The Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority acknowledged the incident, confirming that a collision involving a motorcycle and the bus preceded the attack on the vehicle. The incident involved two distinct events: the road collision and the subsequent mob attack on the driver and bus. The available reports had not established the cause of the crash or responsibility for it.
